Taiwan Power Company|Light Up 13 Layers Remains

Located north of Jinguashi, the Shui Nan Dong Smelter, commonly referred to as the “Thirteen Levels Ruins,” is a massive terraced factory built into the mountainside. Once a bustling copper smelting hub, it faded into history with the decline of the industry. Over the years, the abandoned site has been gradually reclaimed by nature, adding an air of mystery. The ancient, desolate ruins resemble a majestic yet forsaken palace, often called the “Potala Palace of the Mines” and nicknamed the “Taiwanese Laputa” from Hayao Miyazaki’s works.

This Mid-Autumn Festival, the General Association of Chinese Culture (GACC) will collaborate with Taipower to “Illuminate the Thirteen Levels Ruins.”

The main visual design captures the ruins at night, reflecting the event’s slogan: “Mountain Mist Shines, Shui Nan Glows.” The ruins and their moonlit reflection on the rippling “Yin-Yang Sea” evoke the serene and haunting beauty of the night.

A special logo was created for the event, integrating the number “13” and the surrounding environment. The upper edge outlines the shape of the mountain mist, while the gradient in the center simulates outward projection, symbolizing the brilliance of illuminating the Thirteen Levels Ruins. The design employs large color blocks to convey a sense of calmness and grandeur.

The production materials also showcase thoughtful details. A dynamic digital poster and animated logo were created to depict the rhythm of waves and the movement of light and shadow, conveying the core messages of the logo and design concept. For the printed promotional materials, textured MATTER paper with a sandy feel was used, featuring special red-gold and silver printing to emphasize the “light sculpture” highlights of the Thirteen Levels Ruins.

By illuminating the Thirteen Levels, we draw the public’s attention to the site’s former glory and its present-day tranquil beauty.

Honored to collaborate with Taiwan Power Company and the General Association of Chinese Culture in receiving the 2020 Golden Pin Design Award Mark in the Communication Design category.
